Cleansing
A foundation in any skin care routine, cleansing involves using a cleanser (a soap-like product you use to wash your face with) to remove unwanted substances such as dirt, oil, sweat, pollutants, and dead skin cells from your pores. This is important as it prevents your pores from getting clogged, which can lead to acne. Cleansers are usually the first step in your skin care routine and should be used daily, both morning and night, and after sweating (from a workout, sports, or hot weather).
How to choose the right cleanser?
Choosing the right cleanser depends on your skin type. To check your skin type, wash your face with a gentle cleanser, pat it dry, wait 30 minutes, and observe your skin. If your skin is shiny, you have oily skin; if it feels tight, flaky, or rough, you have dry skin; if your forehead, nose, and chin are shiny but your cheeks are tight, then you have combination skin; if your skin is neither oily or dry, then you have normal skin; if your skin is red or irritated then you have sensitive skin.
For Dry Skin:

Exfoliate
Exfoliants (specifically chemical exfoliants) usually come in liquid form and primarily remove dead skin cells, which helps prevent dull skin, rough texture, and clogged pores. Due to their acidic contents, they should be used no more than three times a week, as overusing them can dry out skin. It is also best practice to use them at night, as they make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Regarding the order of your routine, exfoliating comes after cleansing and before moisturizing.
Moisturize

Sunscreen
Sunscreen, usually a cream or gel, protects the skin from the sun’s UV radiation. This is helpful as UV radiation can cause aging, hyperpigmentation (dark spots), sunburns, and, in worst-case scenarios, skin cancer. It should be used every morning as the last step in your skin care routine.
